How to qualify as a quality / NDT inspector
Blueprint and measurement skills for quality inspectors. NDT roles require certification in a method, usually Level II.
- Learn the methods. Take NDT classroom training for a method (for example penetrant or magnetic particle) through a college or training provider.
- Log on-the-job hours. NDT certification needs supervised experience hours. Many people start as a Level I or trainee.
- Build measurement skills. Quality inspectors are asked for blueprint and GD&T reading and fluency with calipers, micrometers and gauges.
- Certify. Your employer certifies you in each method. Level II is what most postings ask for.
Credentials employers mention
- NDT Level II. Certification in a method such as UT, RT, PT, MT or ET, issued by the employer under a written practice.
- AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI). Common for weld inspection roles.
Typical routes only. Requirements differ by employer and state, so read the posting and your state licensing board.
