Who's hiring electricians
How to qualify as an electrician
Industrial or controls experience, usually through an apprenticeship or a college program, plus the state license where one is required.
- Start as an apprentice or trainee. Join a union or employer apprenticeship, or an electrical program at a community or technical college.
- Log supervised hours. Your state sets the hours needed before you can sit the journeyman exam. Check your state licensing board.
- Add controls skills. Motors, PLCs, instrumentation and troubleshooting are what separate industrial postings from residential work.
- Get licensed. Many launch-site and factory postings ask for a journeyman-level license or equivalent experience.
Credentials employers mention
- State electrician license. Rules vary by state. Most license electricians through supervised work hours plus an exam.
- NCCER Electrical credentials. Offered through many apprenticeship and college programs.
Typical routes only. Requirements differ by employer and state, so read the posting and your state licensing board.
